CAPE ELIZABETH June 30th, 2009 – Governor John E. Baldacci today announced plans for the first ever open house of 52 operational lighthouses along the coast of Maine, to be held in September. The Governor was joined by officials from the Coast Guard, the Maine Office of Tourism and the American Lighthouse Foundation for the announcement, held at the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth.
„From the Maine State quarter to many artists‘ renditions of Maine’s coastline, the Maine lighthouse is an enduring symbol of our way of life,“ Governor Baldacci said. „For Mainers and visitors alike, Open Lighthouse Day will be a unique opportunity to learn more about the lighthouses, lighthouse keepers and the communities dotting our coastline.“
Open Lighthouse Day is scheduled for 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009. The partnership between the State, the U.S. Coast Guard and American Lighthouse Foundation is intended to increase awareness of Maine’s rich maritime history.
Governor Baldacci thanked the U.S. Coast Guard for coordinating the inaugural Open Lighthouse Day, the largest effort of its kind in the country.
